The United Nations came into being when its Charter took effect after being ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and a majority of the other signatories. The Charter had been drawn up and signed at a conference in San Francisco in June 1945, with fifty-one founding members. The organisation was created to replace the League of Nations, which had failed to prevent a second world war, and its aims were to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among states and to promote human rights and social progress. The General Assembly held its first session in London in early 1946, and the headquarters were later established in New York City. The anniversary is observed each year as United Nations Day.
