Founding of UNESCO

16 November 1945

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, was founded at a conference held in London just after the end of the Second World War. Delegates from dozens of countries adopted its constitution, which declares that since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be built. The constitution entered into force in November 1946, and the organisation established its headquarters in Paris. UNESCO promotes international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication. It is best known for the World Heritage Convention of 1972, under which it lists sites of outstanding value such as the pyramids of Giza and the Great Barrier Reef, and for programmes such as Memory of the World.
