Bashar al-Assad was born on 11 September 1965 in Qardaha District. A Syrian politician trained as an eye doctor, Assad studied in London and became president in 2000 after the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad. Early hopes of political reform faded, and the protests of the Arab Spring in 2011 were met with force, leading to a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. His government was accused of using chemical weapons and other grave abuses, and it survived with the military support of Russia and Iran. In December 2024 a rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham swept to Damascus, ending his rule, and he fled to Russia. Courts in Europe have issued arrest warrants for him.
