The Pathet Lao, meaning Land of the Lao, was a communist-led nationalist movement in Laos. It was formed in 1950 under Prince Souphanouvong, who was nicknamed the Red Prince, with the backing of the Vietnamese communists of the Viet Minh, and its political leader was Kaysone Phomvihane. For a quarter of a century it fought the royal Lao government in a civil war that was entangled with the Vietnam War, during which the United States carried out a huge secret bombing campaign on Laos. In 1975, after the communist victories in Vietnam and Cambodia, the Pathet Lao took power, abolished the monarchy on 2 December and founded the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
