Publication of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

1950

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a children's fantasy novel by C. S. Lewis, the first published of the seven books of The Chronicles of Narnia. Four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, are sent away from wartime London to a country house, where Lucy discovers a wardrobe that leads to the snowbound land of Narnia. There they meet the lion Aslan and the White Witch, who has made it always winter and never Christmas. The book blends Christian themes, most clearly in Aslan's sacrifice and return, with English folklore and classical myth, and Pauline Baynes drew its original illustrations. It has sold many millions of copies and has been adapted for radio, television, stage and film.
