The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the country and is among the longest written national constitutions in the world. It was drawn up by the Constituent Assembly, with a drafting committee chaired by B. R. Ambedkar, and adopted in November 1949 before it took effect on 26 January 1950, a date now celebrated as Republic Day. It replaced the Government of India Act of 1935 and made India a sovereign democratic republic. It guarantees fundamental rights, sets out directive principles for state policy and creates a federal system with a strong central government. The text has been amended many times to meet changing needs.
