Founding of Olympique Lyonnais

1950

Olympique Lyonnais is a French football club from Lyon, formed after a split from the sports club Lyon Olympique Universitaire. For much of its early history it was a modest side, but under the businessman Jean-Michel Aulas, who became president in 1987, it developed into the leading club in France. Between 2002 and 2008 it won seven Ligue 1 titles in a row, a national record. Its women's team has been even more successful, winning the UEFA Women's Champions League a record number of times and dominating French women's football. In 2016 the club moved to a new stadium in Décines, and its academy has produced players such as Karim Benzema and Alexandre Lacazette.
