Rise of MeToo movement

October 2017

The MeToo movement is a social movement against sexual harassment and assault, in which people publicly share their experiences. The phrase was first used in 2006 by the American activist Tarana Burke, who wanted to support survivors, particularly young women of color. It spread worldwide in October 2017, after The New York Times and The New Yorker published reports of sexual abuse accusations against the film producer Harvey Weinstein, and the actress Alyssa Milano encouraged people to use the hashtag on social media. Millions of posts followed, and many powerful men in entertainment, media, business and politics faced allegations. The movement led to resignations, legal cases and changes in workplace policies, and it also prompted debate about due process and fairness.
