2017 German federal election

24 September 2017

The 2017 German federal election chose the members of the 19th Bundestag. Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, remained the largest group, but with their lowest share of the vote since 1949, while the Social Democrats under Martin Schulz also did badly. The right-wing Alternative for Germany entered the Bundestag for the first time, as the third-largest party. Coalition talks between the conservatives, the Free Democrats and the Greens collapsed, and after a long period the CDU/CSU and SPD formed another grand coalition. Merkel was elected for a fourth term as chancellor.
