2017 Las Vegas shooting

1 October 2017

On an evening in October 2017, a gunman opened fire from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on a crowd of about twenty-two thousand people attending the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip. The attacker, Stephen Paddock, fired for roughly ten minutes with rifles, some fitted with bump stocks, and sixty people were killed and hundreds more injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in modern US history. Paddock killed himself before police reached the room, and no clear motive was ever established. The shooting led to a federal ban on bump stocks, which took effect in 2019 and was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2024.
