'Oumuamua is the first interstellar object seen in the solar system

19 October 2017

On 19 October 2017 the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii detected a faint object racing through the inner solar system on a hyperbolic path, proving that it came from beyond. It was named 'Oumuamua, Hawaiian for 'scout'. It was elongated or flat, tumbling, and reddish, and it accelerated slightly as it left in a way not caused by gravity alone, which led to debate about its nature. A second interstellar visitor, comet 2I/Borisov, appeared in 2019, and the Hawaiian name was chosen to honour the discovery.
