Founding of Fox Broadcasting Company

9 October 1986

The Fox Broadcasting Company is an American television network created by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, working with the executive Barry Diller, as the fourth major national network, to compete with ABC, CBS and NBC. It started with a late-night talk show and limited evening programming. It found an audience with edgy programmes such as Married... with Children, In Living Color and The Simpsons, which became the longest-running American sitcom. In the 1990s it won the broadcast rights to National Football League games, which gave it a major boost, and later series included The X-Files and American Idol. Fox is now part of Fox Corporation, separate from Fox News and from the film studio.
