Construction of Lotus Temple

24 December 1986

The Lotus Temple is a Bahai House of Worship in New Delhi, India, shaped like a half-open lotus flower. It was designed by the Iranian-born architect Fariborz Sahba and dedicated at the end of 1986. Its form is made up of twenty-seven freestanding marble-clad petals arranged in groups of three to make nine sides, with nine doors leading into a central hall. Like all Bahai houses of worship it is open to people of every religion, and there are no sermons, images or rituals, only readings from sacred texts and prayer in silence. Surrounded by pools and gardens, the temple has won architectural awards and is among the most visited buildings in the world.
