Rise of Katipunan

from 7 July 1892 to 10 May 1897

The Katipunan was a secret revolutionary society founded in Manila to win the independence of the Philippines from Spain. Its founder was Andrés Bonifacio, a warehouse clerk, with other members drawn from the urban working class and lower middle class. The society was organized in secret cells with oaths and codes, and it grew rapidly across Luzon. When the Spanish authorities discovered it, in 1896, its members rose in revolt, in what became the Philippine Revolution. Internal rivalry between Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo's faction in Cavite led to the establishment of a revolutionary government under Aguinaldo, and Bonifacio was arrested and executed. The Katipunan is remembered as a founding force of Filipino nationalism.
