Founding of Manchester United F.C.

1878

Manchester United began as Newton Heath LYR, a team formed by workers at the carriage and wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot in Newton Heath. It entered the Football League in 1892 and, after near bankruptcy, was rescued and renamed Manchester United in 1902. Matt Busby rebuilt the team after the Second World War, and the club recovered from the Munich air disaster of 1958 to win the European Cup in 1968. Under Alex Ferguson it won many league titles, domestic cups and the Champions League. Based at Old Trafford, it is among the most supported clubs in the world.
