Nintendo was founded in Kyoto by Fusajiro Yamauchi to make hanafuda, traditional Japanese playing cards, which were sold from a small shop. Its fortunes grew in the twentieth century as it moved into other products, and in the 1970s it entered the video game business. The company reached worldwide fame in the 1980s with the Nintendo Entertainment System and characters such as Mario and Donkey Kong, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. It later introduced the Game Boy, the Wii and the Switch, and its franchises include Zelda and Pokemon. It is one of the oldest and most successful companies in the video game industry.
