Louis de Broglie was born on 15 August 1892 in Dieppe. A French physicist and aristocrat, de Broglie first studied history before turning to physics. In his 1924 doctoral thesis he proposed that matter has wave properties, with a wavelength inversely proportional to momentum, extending the wave-particle duality that had been established for light. The idea was confirmed a few years later by electron diffraction experiments, and inspired Erwin Schrodinger's wave equation. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929. He was a member of the Academie francaise and the Academy of Sciences, and later served as its permanent secretary, and he promoted the peaceful use of atomic energy in France.
