Founding of Real Madrid Club de Fútbol

6 March 1902

Real Madrid was founded as Madrid Football Club by a group of enthusiasts, and later received the title Real, meaning royal, from King Alfonso XIII. Under the presidency of Santiago Bernabeu the club built a large new stadium and, with players such as Alfredo Di Stefano, won the first five European Cups in the late 1950s. It has won more European titles than any other club, and also numerous Spanish league championships. Its rivalry with Barcelona, known as El Clasico, is one of the most-watched fixtures in football. The club is owned by its members and is among the most valuable sports teams in the world.
