Josip Broz Tito was born on 7 May 1892 in Kumrovec. A Yugoslav revolutionary and statesman, Tito was born Josip Broz in a village in Croatia, then part of Austria-Hungary. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army, was captured by Russia in the First World War and became a communist. During the Second World War he led the Partisan resistance against the Axis occupation and, after the war, ruled Yugoslavia as a one-party state until his death. In 1948 he broke with Stalin, and Yugoslavia followed an independent course, developing a system of workers' self-management and becoming a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement. He kept the multi-ethnic federation together by balancing its nations, and after his death in 1980 it began to unravel, breaking apart in the 1990s.
