Release of Thai Wikipedia

25 December 2003

The Thai-language edition of Wikipedia was launched at the end of 2003, as the encyclopedia was spreading to many languages. Thai is spoken by tens of millions of people, mainly in Thailand, and is written in its own script, which has no spaces between words, a feature that poses technical challenges for search and text processing. The edition is written entirely by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Its articles cover Thai history, culture, Buddhism and royalty, as well as general knowledge. Editors have had to work through a number of difficulties, including the country's strict laws on speech about the monarchy, and the community has organized meetings and campaigns to attract new contributors.
