Release of Uzbek Wikipedia

21 December 2003

The Uzbek Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia written in Uzbek, a Turkic language that is the official language of Uzbekistan. Uzbek has been written in several scripts over the last century: Arabic script, Latin in the 1920s and 1930s, Cyrillic under Soviet rule, and then Latin again after independence, with a gradual official transition. For this reason, the Wikipedia has a tool that converts between the Latin and Cyrillic versions of the text. The edition was started by volunteers and has grown to hundreds of thousands of articles, many of them short, covering the country's history, culture and science, as well as general topics.
