Creation of Watson

c. 2000s

Watson is a question-answering computer system built by IBM Research to answer questions in natural language, using a software architecture called DeepQA. Named after IBM's founder Thomas J. Watson, it was developed by a team led by David Ferrucci in the mid-2000s as a new challenge after the chess computer Deep Blue. In February 2011 it competed on the US television quiz show Jeopardy against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, two of the show's best players, and won. IBM then tried to adapt the technology for medicine, finance and other business uses, with mixed results, particularly in healthcare. The project became an early landmark in public understanding of artificial intelligence.
