Wikisource is an online library of free-content texts, run by the Wikimedia Foundation and written and proofread by volunteers. It was launched in November 2003 under the name Project Sourceberg, a play on Project Gutenberg, and soon received its present name. The project collects works that are in the public domain or released under free licences, including books, historical documents, speeches, laws and treaties, and it exists in many languages. Volunteers transcribe texts by comparing them with scanned images of the original pages, a method that makes the content verifiable. It is a sister project of Wikipedia and runs on the same MediaWiki software, and it gives readers a place to find the full text of sources that Wikipedia articles cite.
