Release of Persian Wikipedia

December 2003

The Persian Wikipedia is the Persian-language edition of Wikipedia, written in the Perso-Arabic script and read from right to left. It serves speakers of Persian in Iran, Afghanistan, where the language is called Dari, Tajikistan, where it is called Tajik, and in the worldwide diaspora. The edition grew quickly and is among the larger editions of the encyclopedia in languages other than European ones. Its volunteer contributors have faced technical challenges with the script and with the transliteration of names, and at times official restrictions on access to the site. It is a main source of freely available reference material in the language.
