Creation of Scala

20 January 2004

Scala is a general-purpose programming language that combines object-oriented and functional programming and runs on the Java Virtual Machine. It was designed by Martin Odersky at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, who had earlier worked on generics for Java and on the reference Java compiler. The name stands for scalable language, reflecting the idea that the language grows with the needs of its users. It has a strong static type system with type inference and works smoothly with existing Java libraries. Scala became popular for data processing and backend services, and projects such as Apache Spark and Apache Kafka were written in it. A major rewrite, Scala 3, was released in 2021.
