The Bulgarian-language edition of Wikipedia is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began at the end of 2003, a couple of years after Wikipedia was created. Bulgarian is a South Slavic language written in the Cyrillic alphabet and spoken by around eight million people, mostly in Bulgaria, which was the first country to use the alphabet. The edition has grown to hundreds of thousands of articles written and maintained by volunteer editors, who set their own policies within the wider Wikimedia framework. It covers Bulgarian history, culture and geography in considerable detail.
