Release of Spirited Away

20 July 2001

Spirited Away is a Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. It follows Chihiro, a ten-year-old girl whose parents are turned into pigs after they eat food in a spirit world, and who must work in a bathhouse for gods and spirits to free them. Full of strange creatures and settings drawn from Japanese folklore, it became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history at that time. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003 and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. It is widely considered one of the greatest animated films ever made.
