The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was founded on 14 June 2001 in Shanghai by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It grew out of the Shanghai Five, a group formed in 1996 to settle border questions and build trust between China and the former Soviet republics. The organization focuses on security cooperation, including the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism, as well as economic and cultural exchange. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024, making it one of the largest regional bodies by area and population. Observers disagree about how far it works as a political and security alliance, and its members often have differing interests.
