The Nepalese royal massacre took place at a family dinner at the Narayanhiti Palace in Kathmandu, in which a gunman shot dead King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya and several other members of the royal family. An official inquiry concluded that the gunman was Crown Prince Dipendra, who then shot himself, and he was proclaimed king while in a coma, and died a few days later. The king's brother Gyanendra then took the throne. Many Nepalis doubted the official account and suspected a conspiracy, and the monarchy lost much of its public respect. Combined with the Maoist insurgency, the crisis weakened the institution, and the monarchy was abolished in 2008, when Nepal became a republic.
