Release of Italian Wikipedia

11 May 2001

Italian Wikipedia is the Italian-language edition of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. It was launched in the spring of 2001, within a few months of the first English edition, and it grew into one of the larger editions of the project, written and edited by volunteers. In October 2011 the Italian community temporarily closed access to its articles in protest against a draft law that would have forced websites to correct content on request within a short period, in a form that editors said threatened the independence of the encyclopaedia. The protest drew wide attention in Italy, and the provision was dropped. Like other editions, it is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation.
