Release of Japanese Wikipedia

11 May 2001

Japanese Wikipedia is the Japanese-language edition of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. It was one of the first editions in a language other than English, launched in the spring of 2001, only a few months after the English version began. Contributors, mostly volunteers living in Japan, wrote articles using Japanese characters, which required the software to be adapted to support non-Latin scripts. The edition has grown into one of the largest and most visited, with particularly rich coverage of subjects such as anime, manga, video games, railways and local history. It is run by volunteers under the umbrella of the Wikimedia Foundation, like all other language editions.
