Release of Portuguese Wikipedia

11 May 2001

Portuguese Wikipedia is the Portuguese-language edition of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia. It was launched in the spring of 2001 and is written by volunteers in Brazil, Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries. Because Brazil has by far the largest Portuguese-speaking population, much of the editing community comes from there, which shapes the focus of the edition and its choice of spellings. It is one of the larger editions of the project, with particularly active coverage of Brazilian history, geography and popular culture. Like all other language versions, it is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and edited under free licences.
