Release of Shrek

22 April 2001

Shrek is an American computer-animated fantasy comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation. Based on a children's picture book by William Steig, it follows a grumpy green ogre, voiced by Mike Myers, who sets out to rescue Princess Fiona so that a tyrannical lord will clear the swamp that is his home. Eddie Murphy voices the talkative Donkey, and Cameron Diaz voices Fiona. The film parodied Disney fairy tales and filled its story with pop culture jokes, and it was also notable for its advanced computer animation. It won the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and began a franchise of sequels, spin-offs and a stage musical.
