The Esperanto edition of Wikipedia was one of the first non-English editions of the encyclopedia, begun in the first months of the project. Esperanto, a planned international language created by L. L. Zamenhof in the late nineteenth century, has a worldwide community of speakers spread across many countries, and they used the internet early to write in the language. The edition has grown to hundreds of thousands of articles, which is a very large number for a language with few native speakers, and it ranks among the larger editions of Wikipedia. It is often used as an example of how a small, dispersed community can build a substantial online reference work.
