Discovery of HD 28185 b

4 April 2001

HD 28185 b is a giant planet orbiting a sun-like star in the constellation Eridanus, which was discovered in 2001 by the CORALIE survey of southern stars with a Swiss telescope in Chile using the radial velocity method. It takes a little over a year to circle its star, on a nearly circular orbit, and it is several times as massive as Jupiter. Because it is located in the habitable zone of its star, scientists have noted that a rocky moon, if there were one, might have conditions suitable for life, though this is speculative. Later observations revealed a second, more distant companion in the system.
