Release of Spanish Wikipedia

11 May 2001

The Spanish Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia written in Spanish, started in May 2001, soon after the English edition. In early 2002, a group of Spanish contributors left to found a competing project, the Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español, because they feared that Wikipedia would introduce advertising. The edition continued to grow thanks to its volunteers across Spain and Latin America, and it became one of the largest Wikipedias. It is among the most visited language editions of the project. It is edited by volunteers from many Spanish-speaking countries and run under the Wikimedia Foundation.
