Publication of Indonesia Raya

17 August 1945

Indonesia Raya, meaning Great Indonesia, is the national anthem of Indonesia. It was composed by the nationalist musician and journalist Wage Rudolf Supratman, who first performed it on the violin at the Second Youth Congress in Batavia in 1928, the meeting which proclaimed the pledge of one homeland, one nation and one language. The song became a symbol of the independence movement against Dutch colonial rule and was banned by the Dutch authorities for a time. It was played at the proclamation of independence in 1945, and was confirmed as the national anthem in the new state's constitution. The words call for a united and free Indonesia.
