The Indonesian National Revolution was the armed and diplomatic struggle that followed the declaration of Indonesian independence by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta, just after the Japanese surrender in the Second World War. The Netherlands tried to restore its colonial rule in the former Dutch East Indies, first with British help and then in two major military offensives, called police actions, in 1947 and 1948. Indonesian forces fought a guerrilla war, and there were negotiations, including the Linggadjati and Renville agreements. International pressure, particularly from the United States, forced the Dutch to the negotiating table, and at a round-table conference in The Hague they agreed to transfer sovereignty.
