Birth of Franz Beckenbauer

11 September 1945

Franz Beckenbauer was born on 11 September 1945 in Munich. A German footballer and coach, Beckenbauer was nicknamed Der Kaiser for his elegant, authoritative style of play and is credited with redefining the role of the sweeper as a libero who moves forward from defense. He captained West Germany to victory in the 1974 World Cup and won the European Championship in 1972, as well as three consecutive European Cups with Bayern Munich. He later coached the West German team to the 1990 World Cup title, making him one of the few people to win the trophy as both player and manager. He also led the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
