North Vietnam, officially the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, was the communist state led by Ho Chi Minh, who proclaimed independence in Hanoi at the end of the Second World War. It fought the First Indochina War against returning French colonial forces, culminating in the victory at Dien Bien Phu. The Geneva Accords of 1954 divided the country temporarily at the 17th parallel, and North Vietnam became a separate state with Hanoi as its capital, backed by the Soviet Union and China. It supported the communist insurgency in the south and fought the Vietnam War against South Vietnam and the United States. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, North and South were formally reunified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
