NATO bombing of Yugoslavia

from 24 March 1999 to 10 June 1999

The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, known as Operation Allied Force, was an air campaign launched against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, then made up of Serbia and Montenegro. NATO said that it was intended to stop violence by Yugoslav security forces against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo, after peace talks at Rambouillet had failed. The attacks lasted about eleven weeks and struck military targets, but also bridges, factories and media buildings, and they killed civilians, including in the accidental bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. The campaign did not have approval from the UN Security Council, and its legality has been disputed. It ended when President Slobodan Milosevic accepted the withdrawal of his forces, and Kosovo was placed under UN administration.
