Release of GNOME

3 March 1999

GNOME is a free and open-source desktop environment for Linux and other Unix-like systems, which provides the graphical interface, windows, menus and many standard applications. The project was begun by the Mexican programmers Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena as a free alternative to KDE, which at the time depended on a toolkit, Qt, that was not completely free software. GNOME is built on the GTK toolkit and became part of the GNU Project. Version 1.0 was the first stable release of the project. A major redesign came with GNOME 3 in 2011, which introduced a new style of working. GNOME is the default desktop of many Linux distributions, among them Fedora and Ubuntu.
