Columbine High School massacre

20 April 1999

The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting in Colorado in which two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed twelve fellow students and one teacher before killing themselves. They had planned a much larger bombing, but the explosives they made did not detonate. The attack was widely broadcast live and shocked the United States, leading to debates about gun laws, bullying, video games and school security. It also prompted police forces to change their tactics for dealing with active shooters, so that officers now enter the building without waiting for special units. The name Columbine has since been cited by perpetrators of other attacks, which has caused continuing concern.
