The Miguel de Cervantes Prize is the most prestigious literary award for writers in the Spanish language, named after the author of Don Quixote. It is awarded annually by the Spanish Ministry of Culture to honour the whole body of work of a living writer, and it is presented by the King of Spain at the University of Alcala de Henares, Cervantes's birthplace, on 23 April, the anniversary of his death. The first winner was the Spanish poet Jorge Guillen. Later laureates include Jorge Luis Borges, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa and Juan Goytisolo, representing literary traditions from Spain and Latin America.
