Death of Agatha Christie

12 January 1976

Agatha Christie died on 12 January 1976 in Winterbrook, aged 85. An English writer of detective fiction, Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time by most estimates. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, appeared in 1920 and introduced the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, who was followed by the elderly sleuth Miss Marple. Among her best-known works are Murder on the Orient Express, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and And Then There Were None. Her play The Mousetrap opened in London in 1952 and has run for longer than any other in the West End. She also wrote romances under the name Mary Westmacott and was made a Dame in 1971.
