Establishment of Nahanni National Park Reserve

1976

Nahanni National Park Reserve lies in the Northwest Territories of Canada, along the South Nahanni River in the Mackenzie Mountains. It was one of the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. The river runs through deep canyons and over Virginia Falls, known to the Dene as Nailicho, which is about twice as high as Niagara Falls. The park also has hot springs, karst landscapes and rich wildlife. Legends of a Headless Valley arose from the deaths of prospectors in the early 20th century. The park is the homeland of the Dehcho First Nations, and it was greatly enlarged in 2009. Visitors arrive mainly by floatplane or by canoe.
