Founding of Abuja

1976

Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, a planned city built in the centre of the country to replace Lagos as the seat of government. The choice of a central, sparsely populated location was meant to be neutral ground among Nigeria's three main ethnic groups, the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. The master plan was prepared by an international team, including the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, and construction began in the 1980s. The government officially moved there in December 1991. The city is dominated by Aso Rock, a huge granite outcrop beside the presidential complex, and it has grown very quickly, with extensive suburbs beyond the original plan.
