Launch of Dawn

27 September 2007

Dawn was a NASA space probe sent to study the two largest bodies in the asteroid belt, Vesta and Ceres. Launched from Cape Canaveral in 2007, it used an efficient ion propulsion system, which let it enter orbit around a body, leave it and travel to another, something no earlier spacecraft had done. It reached Vesta in 2011 and stayed for over a year, then arrived at the dwarf planet Ceres in 2015. At Ceres it found bright patches of salts in Occator crater and evidence of ice beneath the surface. The mission ended in 2018 when the probe ran out of the fuel it needed to control its orientation.
