Discovery of TrES-4 b

October 2007

TrES-4 b is a hot Jupiter orbiting a star in the constellation Hercules, found by the Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey, a network of small telescopes that searches for the dimming of stars as planets pass in front of them. When it was announced, it was the largest planet known, with a radius about one and three-quarter times that of Jupiter, even though its mass is less than twice Jupiter's, so its density is extremely low, close to that of balsa wood. It orbits very close to its star, and its swollen state is thought to result from intense heating. The planet became an important test case for theories of how gas giants are inflated.
