Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, in which the series moved from the Second World War to a contemporary setting. Its campaign follows American and British special forces and a team of soldiers across a fictional conflict involving a Middle Eastern coup and Russian ultranationalists, and included memorable set pieces. Its online multiplayer introduced a system of experience ranks, unlockable weapons and perks, and kill streaks that became widely imitated in other games. It was a commercial and critical success, sold many millions of copies and led to a long-running sub-series, starting with Modern Warfare 2 in 2009.
